Aurangabad - Ajanta - Ellora - 4 Days
ITINERARY OVERVIEW
Day 1: Mumbai – Aurangabad
Welcome to Aurangabad, now officially known as Dharmaveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (DCSN), named in honor of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the valiant son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whose coronation took place at Fort Raigad. This historic city is renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Ajanta and Ellora caves, which celebrate the confluence of Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. Upon arrival, a representative will greet you and escort you to your pre-booked hotel. In the afternoon, embark on a half-day city tour, visiting the Bibi Ka Maqbara, a stunning replica of the Taj Mahal, the Panchakki, a unique water-powered flour mill, and the formidable Devgiri Fort, also known as Daulatabad Fort. Overnight stay at your hotel.
Day 2: Aurangabad – Ajanta Caves
Today, take a day trip to the Ajanta Caves, located approximately 100 km from Aurangabad. This world heritage site features a complex of about 30 caves, created in two distinct phases. The caves are dedicated to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, much like the Elephanta Caves near Mumbai and the Kanheri Caves in Sanjay Gandhi National Park. These ancient caves are adorned with exquisite frescoes, wall paintings, and sculptures that represent the zenith of ancient Indian art. Return to Aurangabad for an overnight stay.
Day 3: Aurangabad – Ellora
Explore the magnificent Ellora Caves, another UNESCO World Heritage site located close to Aurangabad. Ellora is home to the famed Kailasa Temple, an extraordinary monolithic structure dedicated to Lord Shiva, and one of the finest examples of rock-cut architecture. Adjacent to the caves is the Grishneshwar Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India and one of the five located in Maharashtra. After exploring these historic sites, return to your hotel in Aurangabad for the night.
Day 4: Aurangabad – Mumbai
After an enriching exploration of Aurangabad’s historic and cultural landmarks, you will be transferred to the airport or railway station for your onward journey back to Mumbai, concluding your memorable trip.
