Day2: City tour (B/L/D)
Breakfast at hotel. In the morning, experience the local life by embarking on a cyclo tour of the bustling capital. The three-wheel bicycle rickshaw has been used to transport people and goods since French colonial times. We start from the Independence Monument, an impressive structure that sits at the centre of a roundabout. Dating back to 1958, it was created to mark the country’s independence from France in 1953. Next, continue to the Royal Palace and adjacent Silver Pagoda. Home to Cambodia’s official royal residence, the grounds are awash with regal structures, intimate temples, and murals that paint a picture of the country’s past. Then, we will learn about traditional arts at Champey Academy of Arts, a non-profit school that delivers Cambodian traditional performing arts training programs.
Lunch at Indian restaurant. After that, we head to the neighboring National Museum to admire the range of ancient artefacts that date back to the pre-Angkor era. And of course, you will have time for shopping at Central Market, where we can put our haggling skills to the test and barter for souvenirs. We return to the hotel and the remaining time is free at leisure.
Please note: Visitors to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are required to keep their knees and shoulders covered. In the evening, enjoy dinner at Indian local restaurant. The guide and transport are available until 9 pm.
Overnight in Phnom Penh.
Day3: Departure (B/L)
Breakfast at hotel. Today, take a sobering step back in time with a visit to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Tuol Sleng was a school in central Phnom Penh that served as S-21 during the Khmer Rouge reign. It operated as a detention and torture center. Out of an estimated 20,000 prisoners, only seven survived. The rest were tortured and killed there or sent to their death at Choeung Ek – the nearby killing field site. Drive just outside the city, in a peaceful rural setting, we find The Killing Fields.
Thousands of people were killed here between the years of 1975 and 1978 and buried in mass graves. These are distressing places to visit, but it’s necessary to get a clearer idea of how Cambodians have suffered and how they have survived.
Next, Then, visit the art-deco Russian Market, a place to barter for locally made silk, crafts, jewellery, and lots more. We will stop at Wat Phnom, an ancient hilltop temple and compact park that marks the official center of the city. Lunch at Indian restaurant and we head to the airport for the next flight departure.
